post-baccalaureate program leading to the degree of Master of Science
in Pharmacology has been designed to attract those students who are
interested in improving their credentials to compete for admission to
a medical school, as well as those individuals who are interested in
this degree to achieve their professional goals. The objectives of this
one-year degree program are to train the students in the principles
underlying the discipline of medical pharmacology. The students will
also learn the approach, rationale, and a variety of methods required
to design and conduct experiments for pharmacological research. This
training will prepare the student for further education in either medical
or graduate school. There is also a significant need in the pharmaceutical
industry for individuals with advanced training in Pharmacology, both
at the level of technical representatives, as well as in research and

Need The National Research Council in its report of October 11, 1998 on graduate education recommends "that Universities identify specific areas of the biological science for which Master's level training is more appropriate." They further recommend that focused Master's programs be established in these areas. There is a significant need for the students with Master's training in pharmacology for the pharmaceutical industry both at the level of technical representatives and as well as in research and manufacturing. While there are adequate number of individuals currently receiving doctoral degrees, there is an employment opportunity for individuals who have graduate training beyond the baccalaureate degree but who do not wish to complete the doctoral program. Others who may benefit from this degree program are individuals who have or are obtaining an MBA or law degree and have an interest in learning the basic principles of drug action and drug interaction. This knowledge may be used in their professional careers. Thus, this program is not only designed for students who are seeking admission to medical school but will also help the students to improve their credentials in order to achieve their personal goals and advancement within the pharmaceutical industry. As described above, those students who may not get admission into a medical school will have increased opportunity for employment in the pharmaceutical industry. |
